The Northwest A&F University (NWAFU) is a key national comprehensive university directly under the jurisdiction of the Chinese Ministry of Education, which is mainly characterized by agriculture, forestry and water conservancy. The university dates from the National Northwest Junior College of Agriculture and Forestry that was established in 1934. It consists of seven formerly independent institutions that consolidated in September of 1999. They were the Northwest Agricultural University, the Northwest Forestry College, the Northwest Institute of Soil and Water Conservation of Academia Sinica, the Northwest Institute of Water Conservancy, the Shaanxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Shaanxi Academy of Forestry and the Northwest Institute of Botany.

NWAFU is one of universities that enter into Project “211”(Project “211” is the Chinese government's new endeavor aimed at strengthening about 100 institutions of higher education and key disciplinary areas as a national priority for the 21st century) and Project “985” (In May 1998, the Ministry of Education initiated a project of building world-leading universities in China; subsequently, several top universities received special three-year grants for quality improvement under what is called the “985” Project.

There are 4,654 faculty and staff at NWAFU, including 1,334 faculty members, of whom, there are 229 professors, 543 associate professors; 188 supervisors for Ph.D. students, 543 supervisors for master students; and 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or Chinese Academy of Engineering. There are 16,921 undergraduate students and 3,220 graduate students (2,385 for master’s degree, 835 for doctoral degree). NWAFU has 15 colleges (departments) and Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, College of Adult Education, and Department of Physical Education, which cover agriculture, science, engineering, economics, management, liberal arts, law, and education. NWAFU has 59 disciplines offering 4-year programs, and offers 78 master’s degree programs, 58 doctoral degree programs and 8 mobile post-doctoral research stations. Besides, NWAFU offers 6 professional master degree programs such as Agricultural Extension, Engineering and MBA. The disciplines in field of Dryland Agriculture, Pedology, Agricultural Water and Soil Engineering, Plant Pathology, Clinical Veterinary Medicine, Soil and Water Conservation and Desertification Control, Crop Genetics and Breeding, Animal Genetic Breeding and Reproduction, and Economics and Management of Agriculture have got great achievements. At present, NWAFU has set up the cooperative relations with 38 universities and research institutes from USA, UK, The Netherlands, Japan, Australia and so on.

NWAFU occupies an area of 326.7 hectares with buildings of classy and harmony in arrangement, and enjoys the fame of Garden-style Campus City. NWAFU offers first class conditions of running school and teaching facilities to youth for their education: two large modern libraries with collection of 1.937 million volumes, whose integrated automated library system connects with campus networks, CERNET, Internet and which is the biggest information center of agricultural sci-tech documents in Northwest China; up-to-date teaching and research platform combined with teaching, experiment and modern technological education; Entomological Museum?the biggest one in Asia and Artificial Rainfall Stimulating Hall; the Facilities Agricultural Sci-Tech Demonstration Park that is controlled automatically and digitally; the standard students’ apartments and canteen on the campus; the up-to-date Agricultural Sci-Tech Exposition Park and large gymnasium.

NWAFU is located in the beautiful and fertile Guanzhong Plain of Shaanxi Province, 82 kms west of the famous ancient city of Xi’an and 70 kms west of Xi’an Xianyang International Airport. NWAFU enjoys a relatively efficient transportation system with graceful environment and fresh air.

Shaanxi Province is one of the most important original place of Chinese civilization, and it enjoys the fame of “Natural History Museum”. The eighth world wonder “Qin Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses” locates here. Shaanxi Province attractes more and more concerning sights by its profound cultures and Loess Plateau customs.

 

Early Age - 1930s
College of Plant Protection  (CPP) .  The famous college of Northwest Science Technology University of Agriculture and Forestry (NWAFU). Found in 1934.  The time just Northwest Agriculture University was born.

From Qing Dynasy, China send young student abroad western to learn modern science and technology. Professor Io Chou is one of them. These young man was just the mainstay in China science 20th century.

World War II - 1940s
CPP was luck joined many famous scholars in 1940s, during World War II many scholar in their achievement age joined the college to avoid Japanese troop. The famous one Professor Io Chou (Entomology), Professor Lu Jin Sheng (Entomology) etc. Even in the day Japan Air force bomb the university, science research never paused.

"New China" - 1950s
In 1950s, People's Republic of China was founded, some scholars retreat to Taiwan with Kuomintang. But many of scholars stay and continues their career. With the New government strong support for science research, 1950s is a big development of CPP, also many important research finished like Entomology, wheat disease (rust etc.), Chemical Pesticides etc.  Take great effort in west China agriculture. And start Modern Agriculture in west China.
